Top shot
Cannabis buds are the top flowers of the cannabis plant. Buds are also known as skunks, buds, flowers and nugs, and are known for their high content of various cannabinoids. Skunks contain a number of active substances such as CBD, and can vary in size depending on the age and genetics of the plant. They are generally less than 1-2 cm in diameter, and typically have a characteristic pungent scent that can be stronger in some varieties than in others.
What is Top Shot?
The top shoot is the top part of the cannabis plant, the part where the flowers are located. It is also the part of the plant where the most resin glands, also called trichomes, are naturally located. Cannabis flowers can vary greatly in appearance, terpene profile and cannabinoid content depending on the variety, cultivation and post-processing, and you therefore typically see top shoots categorized according to which cannabinoid they are primarily rich in, e.g. CBD top shoots or THCA top shoots. Top shot is also known as skunk, both parts refer to the upper part of the cannabis plant
Top shoot variants
Cannabis tops contain a number of other active substances than THC and CBD. Including a wide range of other cannabinoids such as HHC or CBG. The content of CBD and THC is defined by the cannabis variety, as well as how well the plants have been cultivated. It is especially the individual producers' growing/cultivation techniques and the genes used that are crucial for the quality of the tops. Typically, the plants are pruned so that they do not get too tall, so that they instead spend their energy on the tops.
What is the difference between CBD top shoots and THCA top shoots?
CBD tops and THCA tops both come from the top flowers of the cannabis plant. The difference lies in the way the plants are bred. Through breeding and genetics, plants can end up with different contents. In this way, some plants have a higher content of CBD and others a higher content of THCA, which is the basis for the difference between tops.
CBD top shot:
- Contains primarily cannabidiol (CBD), which is a non-euphoric cannabinoid.
- Legal in Denmark as long as the THC content is below 0.2%.
THCA top shot:
- Contains primarily tetrahydrocannabinolic acid (THCA), which is a precursor to THC.
- Legal in Denmark as long as the THC content is below 0.2%.
It is an art form today to have developed CBD genetics with the same potency, scent and appearance as the original and well-known cannabis varieties, which f.eks. White Widow, Lemon Haze. The tricky part comes when keeping the THC level in check so that it does not exceed the limit of 0.2%. This is the reason why research is being done into breeding new types and varieties based on the old genetics. Today, the technique for this breeding process has been found, but there is no longer a clear distinction between the two main varieties. Indica and Sativa, since the top shoots have had to be bred as hybrids of the two varieties.
That's why most CBD cannabis tops are always hybrids. Some have a predominance of Sativa, while others will have a predominance of Indica, which can be decoded by the appearance of the top shoots.
