What is the difference between hash and marijuana?

Hash and marijuana both come from the cannabis plant, but the terms do not refer to the same product. The fundamental difference lies in which parts of the plant are used and how the plant material is subsequently processed.

Marijuana typically refers to the dried flowers and plant material of the cannabis plant, while hash is produced by collecting and processing the plant's resin and trichomes. This gives the two products different structures, appearances, and manufacturing processes.

What is marijuana?

Marijuana is a traditional term for dried plant material from the cannabis plant. It is primarily the plant's flowers, also called buds or colas, that are associated with the term.

Small trichomes are found on the surface of the flower. These are microscopic glandular structures that produce resin and contain a large part of the plant's cannabinoids and terpenes.

When the flowers are harvested, dried, and possibly cured, the plant structure itself is preserved. Marijuana will therefore typically be recognizable by, among other things, leaves, flower structure, pistils, and trichome coverage. The term is especially used internationally and in common cannabis language. In Denmark, you will also encounter words such as cannabis, weed, pot, and colas in descriptions of the plant material.

What is hash?

Hash is a processed cannabis product where the focus is no longer on the whole flower, but on the resin and trichomes found on the plant.

During production, the resin-rich material is separated or collected from the cannabis plant. After this, the material can be processed and pressed into a more compact mass. This is why hash often has a compact structure and is sold as, for example, lumps or slabs rather than as individual colas.

There are also several different production methods. Traditional hash can, for example, be produced by dry sifting, while Ice Water Hash uses cold water and ice to separate trichomes from the plant material. Hash is therefore not a specific cannabis plant or strain, but a product category that can be made from different types of cannabis.
